I’m not ashamed to call myself a pimple-popping addict. On most days, you can find me in front of a mirror battling the blackheads on my nose till I end up looking like Rudolph (yes, the red-nosed reindeer). I have tried almost anything and everything that I come across on the Internet but nothing has ever really helped.
On my quest for the ultimate solution, I did stumble upon COSRX’s BHA Blackhead Power Liquid.
I first came across it on Sokoglam, and when I saw that 99% of the reviews were five stars, I knew I had to try it! Buyers were saying that their pores completely diminished and that their skin was brighter and smoother. Money flew out of my pocket faster than you could finish reading this sentence.
A brief background on the brand: COSRX stands for COSMETIC + RX. Their website states that, “The name means efficacious cosmetics that are RX-ed with natural skincare components based on dermatology.” What does RX mean? It’s a word commonly used in pharmacies and has meanings of prescription, countermeasure, treatment, disposal and solution. Scientific much!
So what exactly is BHA?
BHA stands for Beta Hydroxy Acid. The most common BHA is also known as Salicylic acid, which is a multi-tasking ingredient otherwise known to cure acne, irritation and uneven texture.
The description of COSRX’s product is, “BHA Blackhead Power Liquid is clinically proven to reduce the formation of blackheads and excess sebum is removed and hydrate the skin.”
Now that that’s out of the way, let me describe my experience with the product…
How I use the COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid
I’ve tried applying it both ways: Using my hands, and a cotton pad. I prefer the latter, reason being that the dispensed product has a “liquidy-consistency” (slightly thicker than water), which makes it either slide off the back of my hand, or it gets messy when I use my fingers.
On to the smell: There’s a slight chemical scent (it is after all a BHA product) however it’s not unpleasant in any way and fades away quickly after application.
In the evening after double cleansing and toning, I used 2 pumps on a cotton pad and swipe it across my cheeks and nose before patting the product in. I’ve read reviews that suggested waiting 15-20 minutes before continuing with the regime, however on some nights I finish my regime with this step because I get a little too impatient to wait any longer before heading to bed.
I’ve done my fair bit of research on the waiting time, and some websites state that applying other products immediately will dilute and/or alter the chemical’s (in this case, BHA) pH. However according to this article by The Klog, dermatologists say it’s not completely necessary although you might feel more comfortable waiting due to the slight tingling feeling after applying BHA. After which you follow up with your moisturiser to calm your skin.
Because this was my first time using a “chemical-product”, I wasn’t exactly sure how it would react to my skin. I have slightly oily/combination skin which can get quite irritable to some products, but I was relieved that there wasn’t any irritation whatsoever, neither did it dry out my skin after application. The only feeling was a slight tingling/tightening sensation on my cheeks after each application.
After using it for about three months or so, my blackheads and pores didn’t really disappear but the appearance of my pores have reduced significantly! The best way I can describe it is that my blackheads are now about the size of a full stop rather than a bullet point (which is definitely a good thing). And also, they’re less stubborn and much easier to extract than before.
The fact that this product has reduced the size of my pores pleases me, even if it didn’t completely get rid of them (I’m beginning to wonder if my blackheads are developing a relationship with me). The only downside for me is having to wait 15-20 minutes after each application to allow full absorption before continuing with the skin regime, which is considerably long because most nights I just can’t wait to hit the sack. That’s also the reason why I only use the product at night, because I would very much rather spend that extra 15 minutes snoozing when I wake up in the morning for work!
In my opinion, COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid is suitable for all skin types, although I do recommend those with sensitive/dry skin to follow up with a moisturiser to soothe the skin after application.
If you’re still on the fence about trying COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, I would recommend you to try it. I don’t come across many others with troubled pores like mine so I’m pretty sure this product may help the less troubling ones. Priced at only $22.50, you get 100ml worth of product, which can more or less last you a year considering you won’t have to use a lot of it each time.
